  • DESCRIPTIONS & INFORMATION

The Via Ferrata de Saint Vincent de Mercuze, also known as the "Rocher de l'Envers" via ferrata, is the latest to open in Isère in the Chartreuse massif since August 2014. It's a fairly easy, not very athletic route, perfect for a family introduction to via ferrata. Its green undergrowth and bucolic atmosphere are particularly noteworthy, as is its accessibility for younger climbers!

After an approach walk winding around the river, you'll come to the beautiful 45m-high Alloix waterfall, which you'll walk around behind to reach the start of the via ferrata.

The first section is not very aerial, with moderately steep steps up to either side of the stream. You then reach the famous footbridge overlooking the waterfall at the entrance to the Alloix canyon, where you might be lucky enough to see the canyoneers abseiling down!

On the second section, we gradually emerge from the forest and the view opens up to reveal the Chartreuse cliffs above us and the Belledonne massif opposite with its snow-capped peaks.

The atmosphere of the waterfalls and the ease with which the obstacles can be climbed make this via ferrata a superb introduction to climbing.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1What does "an accessible via ferrata" mean?
It's a via ferrata that's been designed for young people (the rungs are low) but also designed for beginners without scaring them. It's pretty, there's very little fear of heights and there are some fun sections. Everything you need for a gentle introduction to this activity.
2Are there any compulsory sections on this via ferrata?
All the passages on this via ferrata are compulsory, but as they are all at low level, they don't pose any particular problems.
3Is it possible to swim along the via ferrata?
Although it's tempting because we'll be passing very close to the pools, for safety reasons we won't be able to unhook ourselves and take a dip along the way. But don't worry, splashes can happen very quickly!

    A WORD FROM THE GUIDES

    XAVIER
You alternate between shaded passages, open views, monkey bridges and footbridges over waterfalls. For me, it's the best way to discover the via ferrata in a gentle, yet wild setting!
    CHARLIE
One of the most accessible via ferrata in Isère, but the sensations and scenery are there for the taking. The passage over the monkey bridge in front of the waterfall is as photogenic as it gets!
